After two recent alcohol-related crashes left 9 dead, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia is pleading with the public not to drink and drive.
““Don’t drink and drive,” Garcia said. “Don’t think you can drive after drinking. If you don’t value your life, please value the lives of those who share the roads with you.”
The most recent accident occurred early Monday when a wrong-way driver on Beltway 8 struck another vehicle, killing four adults and a toddler boy. An adolescent girl was airlifted to Memorial Hermann, where she was in critical condition.
The victims, who were not wearing seatbelts, have not yet been identified.
The driver allegedly going the wrong way, Efraim Carmona, 34, is charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault. His blood alcohol level was found to be .23, close to three time the legal limit. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital and is expected to be released in a few days.
Another DWI accident on June 22 killed four people in southwest Houston.
At a press conference, Sheriff Garcia asked area residents to spread the word through social media and any other means that drinking and driving must stop.
“I am here to solicit the support of every citizen in Harris County asking you to join me in keeping our families safe, our roadways safe, but most importantly to be a good friend, to be a good neighbor,” he said.
