A new report by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association indicates that there has been little reduction in the number of speeding-related fatalities over the past three decades. This is in spite of the fact that automobiles are much safer, and seatbelt usage rates are higher than ever before.
High-speed accidents are high-impact accidents that can lead to serious and catastrophic injuries. Most speeding-related accidents can be traced to young male drivers, and occur in rural areas.
According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association report, there were just over 32,000 accident fatalities in 2010, and 10,000 occurred in auto accidents linked to motorists driving at excessive speeds. Approximately one-third of motorists killed every year in accidents are killed in crashes caused by speeding drivers. In fact, over the past few decades, there has been no decline in the number of people being killed in these accidents, although Houston car accident attorneys have noted a decline in drunk driving accident-related fatalities.
Safety groups and Texas car accident lawyers need to take these findings especially seriously. In Texas, transportation agencies recently made the decision to increase speed limits on a number of highways. In fact, this apathetic attitude to speeding is one of the reasons why accident deaths caused due to speeding are still high.
There is also a resistance to automated technology that can help reduce the risk of speeding-related accidents. For instance, there’s plenty of public resistance to the installation of speed cameras at critical areas in Texas cities. Speed cameras can help reduce the number of motorists who drive at excessive speeds.
